Hal Porter Short Story Competition

The Hal Porter Short Story Competition was the idea of Bairnsdale-based writer, Peter Millard, who approached the local Porter family for permission to use Hal’s name for the award which began in 1994. Peter is the organiser and head judge who shortlists the anonymous entries for two other judges to read. Hal Porter grew up in Bairnsdale and so far is East Gippsland’s most famous writer, so it was apt to name the award after him. The award is an annual one and the current sponsor is The Hill of Content Bookshop in Melbourne.
