The Uni Pub ANU Short Story Prize

The Uni Pub ANU Short Story Prize is a newcomer to the literary competition scene, being first offered in 2007. It was announced at the grand opening of the eponymous alehouse and has been very generously funded by the pub’s proprietors. Open to all students enrolled at the Australian National University, with free choice of topic and a first prize of $5,000, the inaugural competition attracted more than 150 entries. The judging panel included Uni Pub proprietor and well-known Canberra lobbyist Eric Walsh, former ABC boss Brian Johns and ANU Chancellor (former Ambassador to New Zealand) Allan Hawke. Impressed by the quality of the entries, the judges identified 10 stories of particular merit. But they were unanimous and confident in their decision to award the first prize to Kirani Carlin for Shatter.
