Here are the stories of a surprisingly diverse group of second-wave feminists from Melbourne’s Women’s Liberation Movement: the ‘brazen hussies’ of the 1970s who marched in the streets, who chained themselves to the doors of the Arbitration Commission demanding equal pay, who invaded men-only public bars, who protested at beauty contests and on trams and who challenged police to arrest them for having had illegal abortions.
They resisted existing gender stereotypes, established women’s refugee and rape crisis groups, safe spaces for lesbians, women’s circuses and theatre; they fought discrimination in industry, education and the public service.
These are stories told with passion, humour and intelligent reflection on life-changing experiences – not just for these individuals but what brought about significant change for all Australian women.
