About The Event

Join us to hear how Alan Attwood has brought to life an intriguing and incredible story. Set in the year of Halley’s Comet, "Houdini Unbound" merges history and invention, reality and illusion. Like Houdini’s own act, is it possible to believe what you see or hear?

Alan will be in conversation with Lorin Clarke, author of "Would that be funny?: Growing up with John Clarke" - and the answer is yes! Lorin's book is hilarious and humble, and a wonderful celebration of the joy John Clarke brought to so many of us.

Alan Attwood has worked as an abalone packer, dishwasher and mail sorter, but mainly as a journalist. He has written for publications ranging from The Sunday Times, London, to Time magazine and covered events as diverse as the first free elections in South Africa, soccer in Northern Greece, political intrigue in Morocco and four Olympic Games. Between 1995–98 he was the New York-based correspondent for The Age and Sydney Morning Herald newspapers. From 2006–16 he was editor of The Big Issue magazine in Australia, where he hired Lorin to be a regular columnist.

Alan's previous books include "Sinking into Winter", shortlisted for The Australian/Vogel Literary Award in 1990, "Breathing Underwater", and "Burke’s Soldier", shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize in 2004. "Houdini Unbound" is bound to be a magical story, full of mystery, music, and flying machines.

Tickets are free, but booking is essential.
